Dominican Republic and OIRSA
The OIRSA established its Representation in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 2003, after three significant events for the agrosanitary situation of this country. Firstly, the signing of the Agreement for the establishment of OIRSA by the Dominican Republic, together with the other countries in the region, in May 1987, which repealed the II San Salvador Agreement. Secondly, the ratification of the OIRSA Constitutive Agreement by the Dominican Republic in 2002 allowed its full membership in the Organization. Finally, the signing of the Collaboration Agreement between the Government of this country, through the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Organization in 2003.
Since then, OIRSA has provided technical and financial support to national and regional phytosanitary programs and projects. These efforts have contributed to keeping the Dominican Republic free from pests and diseases, as well as controlling and eradicating those that were already present.
Today, OIRSA, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture, is involved in various programs and projects in the Dominican Republic. These include the implementation of the National Bovine Traceability System (SINAT-DO), the Phytosanitary Management Program for Bananas, the Pesticide Residue Surveillance and Monitoring Project, and the Action Plan for Strengthening the Export Capacities of the Dominican Republic's Agricultural Sector. Additionally, the OIRSA Representation is carrying out various activities through technical and financial cooperation, supporting important national agrosanitary issues such as Huanglongbing (HLB) in citrus, Black Sigatoka (Mycosphaerella fijiensis), Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV), Fruit Fly (Ceratitis capitata), and Coffee Rust. (Hemileia vastatrix), Oriental Vegetable Production, Classical Swine Fever Control, Apiculture Program, and Avian Disease Control, among others.
