{"id":17307,"date":"2025-04-10T11:50:41","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T17:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.oirsa.org\/?page_id=17307"},"modified":"2025-04-10T12:09:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T18:09:14","slug":"belize-y-el-oirsa","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.oirsa.org\/en\/belize-y-el-oirsa","title":{"rendered":"Belize and OIRSA"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><section class=\"vc_section\"><section class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-8\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"  ><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>Belize and OIRSA<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>OIRSA opened its Representation in Belize in 1996 after the Belizean government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Organization, establishing its full membership in OIRSA as a full-fledged member state.<\/p>\n<p>As one of its early activities, the organization implemented the Servicio Internacional de Tratamientos Cuarentenarios (SITC) in the country and has since been working collaboratively with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise through the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) in regional programs and projects related to phytosanitary matters.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Animal Health<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Through the Regional Classical Swine Fever (CSF) Control Program, the tonsils of pigs have been sampled for possible disease diagnosis in border areas with Guatemala, reinforcing quarantine measures to prevent the introduction of pork products or by-products from that country. In addition, talks have been given to producers, and four prevention barriers have been installed at entry points with Guatemala. The diagnostic laboratory has been strengthened by acquiring materials to analyze collected samples.<\/li>\n<li>The OIRSA Representation in Belize also supported the implementation of the national livestock herd sweeping for determining the prevalence of Tuberculosis (TB) and Brucellosis (Br), incorporating the Trazar Agro traceability system. With funds from OIRSA in Mexico, eight veterinarians who participated in the sampling for TB and Br were hired. Through the OIRSA\/IDB project, 'Harmonized Bovine Traceability System,' the animal identification system with traceability capacity was developed. One of the main achievements of these projects is highlighted by the fact that, in February 2013, Belize had its first live cattle export to Mexico.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Plant Health<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Within the framework of the OIRSA - ICDF Taiwan project: 'Strengthening the OIRSA region in the control of Huanglongbing (HLB) and the implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) in citrus,' two greenhouses were constructed\u2014one for bud multiplication and the other for a germplasm bank\u2014facilitating the production of healthy citrus plants for Belize and the region. Additionally, a coordinator has been hired to lead this project, along with four field technicians, to implement the activities included in it. To date, a protocol has been developed for demonstration plots that will serve as a field school to train citrus producers.<\/li>\n<li>El laboratorio regional de controladores biol\u00f3gicos ubicado en Belize continua con la producci\u00f3n masiva del parasitoide\u00a0Anagyrus kamali, controlador biol\u00f3gico de la Cochinilla Rosada del Hibisco,\u00a0Maconellicoccus hirsutus\u00a0(Green). En los \u00faltimos cinco a\u00f1os se logr\u00f3 liberar m\u00e1s de 1.3 millones de espec\u00edmenes en la regi\u00f3n del OIRSA, espec\u00edficamente, para el control biol\u00f3gico de esta devastadora plaga. \u00a0En el a\u00f1o 2020 se inici\u00f3 con la reproducci\u00f3n de otros enemigos naturales en el laboratorio, los cuales son producidos a gran escala para el control biol\u00f3gico de plagas de importancia econ\u00f3mica. La\u00a0Chrysoperla carnea\u00a0insecto depredador altamente eficiente para el control biol\u00f3gico de numerosos insectos plagas de cuerpo blando como la mosca blanca, trips, \u00e1fidos, cochinillas entre otros. La avispa diminuta\u00a0Trichogramma pretiosum\u00a0parasitoide de huevecillos de plagas lepid\u00f3pteros, se reproducen masivamente en el laboratorio cuales son liberados como un componente importante para un programa de manejo integrado de plagas. En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os se ha capacitado m\u00e1s de 260 agricultores, t\u00e9cnicos de campo, extensionistas, y estudiantes sobre el implementaci\u00f3n y liberaci\u00f3n de los enemigos naturales. Con el fin de validar esta nueva tecnolog\u00eda en Belize, el OIRSA uni\u00f3 esfuerzos con instituciones y el Ministerio de Agricultura de Belize para\u00a0 efectuar m\u00e1s de 10 proyectos pilotos en campo en diversos cultivos de la zona para demostrar la efectividad de los enemigos naturales como\u00a0Bemisia tabaci\u00a0en el cultivo de coco,\u00a0Plutella xylostella\u00a0en Brassicas,\u00a0Diaphorina citri\u00a0en c\u00edtricos,\u00a0Pseudococcus elisae\u00a0en banano,\u00a0Megalurothrips usitatus\u00a0en frijol,\u00a0Diatraea saccharalis\u00a0en ca\u00f1a de az\u00facar,\u00a0Diaphania nitidalis\u00a0en pepino y\u00a0Spodoptera frugiperda\u00a0en ma\u00edz.\u00a0 En la actualidad agricultores est\u00e1n utilizando esta tecnolog\u00eda en sus parcelas con el fin de reducir la utilizaci\u00f3n de grandes cantidades de agroqu\u00edmicos y buscan la reducci\u00f3n del costo de producci\u00f3n obteniendo mayor rentabilidad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Quarantine:<\/h4>\n<p>The Representation supported the competent authorities in the implementation of the Remote Diagnosis System using digital images.
